Four Techniques To Clear A Clogged Drain
Do you have a drain in your home that is clogged and you can't seem to get it unstuck? Try using one of these 4 techniques that will get your water flowing once again.
Plastic Drain Auger
One tool that any homeowners should have under their sink is a plastic drain auger. These look like very long pieces of plastic with sharp edges on them, and they can be great at removing clogs that are near the surface. This includes things like hair that is in your bathtub drain and not being caught by a strainer. You'll feed the auger into the drain and try to break up the clog that is inside it. The auger can sometimes help bring the item that is clogging the drain out, or it may cause it to safely flow down the drain and into the sewer.
Auger Snake
An auger snake is a handheld tool that has a spinning tip, which works by spinning a handle manually. You will crank the handle as you feed the cable down the drain, and the tip will spin and break through any clog that is in its path. This tool will likely cause the clog to get stuck in the tip, which means that you need to extract the cable and clean off whatever is stuck in the tip. This can be a great tool to use in bathtubs and sinks to get rid of what is down the drain.
Wet-Dry Vacuum
A wet-dry vacuum is a great tool to simply suck out the clog that is in the drain, and if you have one in your home, it is worth trying. Start by removing the air filter from the vacuum since it shouldn't be installed when sucking up wet items. Place the vacuum over the drain, turn it on, and see what comes out.
Plunger
A common mistake that people make is using the wrong type of plunger to unclog a drain. There are cup plungers and sink plungers, which serve two different purposes. A cup plunger is designed to be used with a toilet since it will form a tight seal along the bottom of the bowl. A sink plunger has a flat surface, which helps form a seal along the wide base of a sink. Make sure you are using a sink plunger on your sink or bathtub clog, and you'll have much better results.
