4 Things That Could Be Causing Your Bathroom To Smell Like An Outhouse

When you walk into your bathroom, do you think that you've walked into an outhouse? If your bathroom smells awful, it could be caused by one of a few different issues. Here, you will find a short list of the things that can cause your bathroom to smell so terrible and help in resolving each of those issues.

Wax Seal Failure

Underneath your toilet, there is a wax seal that creates an airtight seal between the base of the toilet and the drain pipe. Over the years, this seal can crack as it dries out. When this happens, the smells from within the sewer pipe can fill your bathroom. You can replace it with ease and very little money.

Make a trip to your local home improvement store and buy a replacement wax ring. Drain the water out of the toilet, disconnect the waterline, unbolt it from the floor and move it to the side. Remove the old wax ring and clean the area. Now place the new ring in place and gently set the toilet back into place. Be sure to line the toilet up with the drain hole. Reconnect everything and give it a test.

Dirty Drains

Drains can get clogged or lined with skin particles, hair and whatever else is getting washed down them. Try giving the drains a good cleaning using a drain cleaning brush followed by a vinegar and baking soda mixture. This will not only help to free the slow drains, but will also kill the odors being released from them.

Dry Drain Pipe Traps

If the pipe traps dry up, the odors from the sewer lines can fill your home with awful smells. If the shower or sink aren't used often, you may be able to fix this by simply pouring a couple of buckets of water down the drains. If you have a floor drain in the bathroom, pour some water down that drain as well.  If this was the cause of the odors, you've just fixed it.

Damaged Pipes

If the pipes under your flooring or behind the walls are cracked, you will smell the sewer in no time. This is one of those instances in which it is best to call a plumber for assistance. It can be difficult to access the pipes to find the leak and replace them without making a bigger mess of things.

If you've done all of this and still haven't put a stop to the stink in your bathroom, talk with your local plumber for assistance with issues like toilet repair.
